Description: A fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 won't receive and install Windows updates.


Cause: A fresh install of WIndows 7 SP1 doesn't contain the needed WIndows Update client needed to retrieve updates.


Fix: 

First check whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit and apply it to the applicable instructions below.


1. Download the applicable update below

    32-bit

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46827

    64-bit

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46817

2. Run the command below using an administrative elevated command prompt.

    net stop wuauserv

3. Run the Windows Update you downloaded earlier.

4. Restart the computer.

5. Download the applicable update below.

    32-bit

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53335

    64-bit

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332

6. Run the command below using an administrative elevated command prompt.

    net stop wuauserv

7. Run the second Windows Update you downloaded earlier.

8. Restart the computer.

9. You should now be able to check and install Windows Updates.
