Wordpress - Secure File Uploads

Modified on Tue, 12 Mar at 3:16 PM

MiClub recommends that any documents containing private user information should be uploaded using the Download Monitor plugin within Wordpress. This adds an additional level of security to documents by generating a new URL to the document that (when added correctly) can only be accessed by logged-in users.

Using Download Monitor for added security

Step 1: Find Download Monitor in the admin area of Wordpress under the heading "Downloads".

Step 2: Click the "Add New" button to create a new document.

This will create a new document in a similar style to the posts layout. The key fields are highlighted in blue below:

- Add your document's Title in the top field.

- Tick the Members only checkbox to force users to be logged in to see the document. This is key!

- Upload your document using one of the buttons (upload level/browse for file are the preferred options)

Step 3: Upload your Document

Once the document has been uploaded, the file section will display the url as per the example below:

Ensure the Members only checkbox has been selected.

Step 3: Publish your Document

When you're happy with everything, publish your document.

Step 4: Adding your Document to a Page/Post

Scroll to the Download Information section. The URL for the document can be copied using the blue copy button to the right of the field. Click on it to copy the link to add to your page/post.

Step 5: Adding the Secure Document to a Page/Post

Navigate to your page/post to add the document into the content.

Select and highlight the text you wish to link to the document as you would a regular link:

Click the link button in the toolbar in the editor and paste the copied URL into the link field that pops up.

Publish or Update your page/post and your document should be protected. This means that any logged-in member viewing the page will be able to view the document.

Users who aren't logged in will be asked to login to see the document:

Please email [email protected] if you require further assistance with using the Download Monitor plugin for secure documents.
