Kiosk - Network Connectivity Issues

Description: A kiosk doesn't have network/ Internet connectivity.


Cause: There are a number of possible reasons why the kiosk doesn't have Internet connectivity.


Check: Perform the check below to narrow the issue at hand.


Cable is plugged in at both ends.

Make sure the computer is connected to the network via network cable or wireless network.

If it's connected via network cable make sure Windows isn't reporting the network cable isn't unplugged by;

1. Open Control Panel => Network and Sharing Center => Change adapter settings.

2. Check the status for the Local Area Connection. IF the cable is unplugged on either end you will see similar status and picture below.


Network Interface Card has obtained a valid IP address.

Make sure the network interface card has obtained an IP lease from the network's DHCP server.

1. Open Control Panel => Network and Sharing Center => Change adapter settings.

2. Right click on the correct network interface card (e.g. Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection) and click on Status and then Details.

3. A window called Network Connection Details should be open and contain similar information to the image below.

    DHCP Enabled: should have a value of 'Yes'. If not look at the instructions below for enabling DHCP.

    IPv4 Address: Should have an address that doesn't begin with 169, e.g. 169.0.0.1. If it does this means it wasn't able to get an IP lease from the club's DHCP server and you should contact their IT service provider.

    Lease Obtained: this should have a date and timestamp of when a lease was given.

    Lease Expires: this should have a date and timestamp of when the lease expires.


DHCP Settings

Make sure a network interface card is set to use DHCP.

1. Open Control Panel => Network and Sharing Center => Change adapter settings.

2. Right click on the correct network interface card (e.g. Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection) and click on Properties.

3. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.


4.Make sure it is configured as below.


Routing out to the Internet.

The steps below will check whether you can reach the Internet in this case Google.

1. Open a command prompt

2. Type; ping 8.8.8.8

3. If you have Internet connectivity you will receive a response as shown below with 4 packets sent and received.


DNS resoslution

The steps below will check whether DNS resolution is working on the clients computer.

1. Open a command prompt

2. Type; nslookup www.miclub.com.au

3. You should receive a response for the lookup similar below.
